Гайана, Кооперативная Республика Гайана Государство на северо-востоке Юж. Америки. 215 тыс. кв. км. Население 730 тыс. человек (1993). Городское население 31% (1992). Официальный язык – английский. Верующие – протестанты, католики, мусульмане, индуисты. Административно-территориальное деление: 10 районов. Входит в Содружество. Столица – Джорджтаун. Глава государства и правительства – президент. Законодательный орган – однопалатное Национальное собрание. На севере и северо-востоке – заболоченная низменность, в центральной части и на юге – Гвианское плоскогорье (до 2772 м высотой, г. Рорайма). Климат субэкваториальный. Крупные реки – Эссекибо и Коранштейн. Ок. 85% территории – постоянно влажные вечнозеленые леса, на юго-западе, севере и северо-востоке – саванны. Национальный парк Кайетур.
